Computational Models for Ontology
نویسنده
چکیده
Is it possible to construct a computational model how ontology ‘works’? Most ontologies cover only a small part of reality – can we construct computational models which demonstrate how reality and knowledge about reality are linked? What would such a computational model contribute to the current discussion? Many practical ontologies are computational models – from database schema to the data descriptions in AI programs. They are used to describe how a certain subset of reality is conceptualized, usually in a software application. A computational model for an ontology must bring together reality and the knowledge of this reality as it is used in, e.g., a computer program. In this contribution I describe computational models of reality and cognitive agents, and trace the different aspects of the ontology, from reality to the beliefs of agents. In this model, we can precisely determine what terms like ‘reality’, ‘Cognitive Agent’, ‘data’, ‘Beliefs (Knowledge)’, etc., mean. The distinction between ontology and epistemology can be drawn exactly. The computational model is constructed in a multi-agent framework, where it is possible to model an external reality and agents which interact with this reality in a systematic way. Simple interactions with the model are possible to demonstrate that the formal construction performs as expected from real world experience. Individual parts of the computational model have been realized and used to discuss particular applications; we are currently integrating the different parts to a single comprehensive model as described here. The paper lists a number of ontological commitments, mostly self evident and derived from daily experience of interacting with the world, which were used during the construction of the computational model. These can help to identify the smallest, simplest set of commitments to build into an ontology. Developing a BIM-based Spatial Ontology for Semantic Querying of 3D Property Information
With the growing dominance of complex and multi-level urban structures, current cadastral systems, which are often developed based on 2D representations, are not capable of providing unambiguous spatial information about urban properties. Therefore, the concept of 3D cadastre is proposed to support 3D digital representation of land and properties and facilitate the communication of legal owners...
متن کاملCOMODI: an ontology to characterise differences in versions of computational models in biology
BACKGROUND Open model repositories provide ready-to-reuse computational models of biological systems. Models within those repositories evolve over time, leading to different model versions. Taken together, the underlying changes reflect a model's provenance and thus can give valuable insights into the studied biology. Currently, however, changes cannot be semantically interpreted. To improve th...
متن کاملContext-aware Modeling for Spatio-temporal Data Transmitted from a Wireless Body Sensor Network
Context-aware systems must be interoperable and work across different platforms at any time and in any place. Context data collected from wireless body area networks (WBAN) may be heterogeneous and imperfect, which makes their design and implementation difficult. In this research, we introduce a model which takes the dynamic nature of a context-aware system into consideration. This model is con...
متن کاملOntology Suitability for Uncertain Extraction of Information from Multi-Record Web Documents
Ontology based data extraction from multi-record Web documents works well [ECLS98, ECJ98, ECJ99, EJN99], but only if the ontology is suitable for the Web document. How do we know whether the ontology is suitable? To resolve this question, we present an approach based on three heuristics: density, schema, and grouping. We encode the first heuristic as a density function and use probabilistic mod...
متن کاملAn Ontology for Comparative Cognition: A Functional Approach
The authors introduce an ontology for the study of how animals think, as well as a comprehensive model of human and animal cognition utilizing the ontology. The IDA (Intelligent Distribution Agent) model of cognition, a computational and conceptual model derived from a working software agent, is described within the framework of the ontology. The model is built on functional needs of animals, r...
